1. Purpose of the Qualification
The Mechanical Fitter qualification is a trade-based occupational programme designed to develop
competent artisans who are able to fabricate, maintain, fault-find, repair, install, commission and
overhaul mechanical sub-assemblies and machines in various industrial environments.
2. Occupational Outcome
A qualified Mechanical Fitter is able to apply hand skills to fabricate mechanical components,
perform routine and planned maintenance, diagnose mechanical faults, repair and replace
components, install and commission machines, overhaul complex machinery, and work safely in
compliance with health, safety, environmental and quality standards.
3. Structure of the Qualification
The qualification consists of knowledge modules (17%), practical skills modules (20%) and work
experience modules (63%), ensuring a strong balance between theory, practice and workplace
exposure.
4. Duration and Time Allocation
The total qualification consists of 410 credits, translating to approximately 4 100 notional learning
hours. When delivered through an apprenticeship or learnership route, the programme is typically
completed over a period of three years.
